There are the times when I sit t the keyboard and the mind is bubbling with ideas flowing to the surface and breaking out into the light. Other times, the thoughts are there but the means of expressing them are subdued and I have to coax them out like shy young pets that need the confidence to show themselves. This is the issue that publicity officers for clubs may have and they start to feel inadequate that they really can’t present the news of their club adequately. I find that starting the piece I wish to prepare seems the best way to get the thoughts into a coherent flow and then the ideas go on the paper with the necessary polish and tidy up before the recording is made. One of the things that I have had to get my head around is that the way I speak, in part, determines the flow of words as well as their choice. What I am saying is, if you are preparing an audio or video recording which is scripted, don’t forget to be yourself. Telling a story or making an announcement is always going to be best done as naturally as possible unless it is something formal which can be read as it appears on the page. In the recent past, I made mention of the possibility of the recurrence of a la Nina and the faltering of the Bureau of Meteorology to declare one. Well the matter has been settled and the various levels of government and departments and agencies are releasing warnings to get us to prepare for the possibility of higher rainfalls during Spring and Summer. This year, we are being reminded that the soil is still water logged from the past two wet periods and the likelihood of flash flooding is increased with the runoff not being able to soak in. An important reminder is being put out for us to think about our neighbours and to check that they are prepared too. Without lessening the seriousness of the flooding disaster that is taking place in Pakistan, that country is providing a clear lesson on the outcomes of rain water that can’t get away. With amateurs committed to local bodies which provide community support, perhaps it is an area where radio clubs can offer a little as well. Being able to ensure those around us have the necessary means to get help if it is needed is very important in critical situations. Perhaps your club can touch base with your local Council Disaster Management Committee and offer assistance with communications. Perhaps some refresher talks on emergency communications for members and having some of the local first responders talk to members could be worthwhile in your area. Knowing who to contact and how to give support through participation in our hobby and via local service organisations can give the satisfaction of giving help when it was needed. I’m Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that’s what I think....how about you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------* 2022 Social Scene VK4 - Sunfest THIS Sunday 18 September 10:00 AM Mountain Creek State School (noreply email) VK4 - GOLD COAST HAMFEST Nov 13. @ Country Paradise Parklands TO SUPPLY QNEWS ITEMS:- Send SCRIPT to qnews@wia.org.au send audio to http://www.wia.org.au/members/broadcast/upload/ QNEWS Tips to get MORE out of your weekly newscast on VK4WIA If you would like to submit club news items for inclusion in QNEWS broadcasts, please email your item in text to:- qnews@wia.org.au THEN submit audio:- To submit audio email qnews@wia.org.au and ask for the current password then read "how to submit items" in the weekly news page on http://www.wia.org.au/members/broadcast/contribute/ Remember the sooner you submit audio material the more the likelihood of it being broadcast in the very next edition QNEWS.
